The Sub-Committee of the Public Accounts Committee on Friday came across cases of theft and embezzlement of rolling stock material at different locations, causing a loss of over Rs151 million to Pakistan Railways.
Chaired by Shahida Akhtar Ali, the committee reviewed audit objections relating to the ministry for the years 2010-11 and 2013-14. Audit officials told the committee that cases of theft and embezzlement had surfaced in seven formations at different locations.
The secretary railways said responsibility had been determined through inquiries and action had also been taken against those responsible. He said the department was now ensuring compliance with the standard operating procedures to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
The sub-committee also examined an audit objection regarding the misprocurement of locomotives and non-recovery of dues from contractors. The committee directed the department to take strict action against those involved in financial irregularities.
