Céline Dion's long-awaited return to the stage came with tears, gratitude and a promise finally kept. The 58-year-old singer kicked off her 26-show residency at Plenitude Arena in Nanterre, France, on Saturday, September 12, marking her first full concert in more than six years. And within seconds of starting her opening song, On Ne Change Pas, Dion was already overcome with emotion.
The My Heart Will Go On singer paused mid-performance, wiped away tears and placed a hand over her heart as the crowd watched. After collecting herself, she finished the song before launching into Destin and addressing the audience. Speaking in French and English, Dion told fans, "There are many of you here tonight from all over the world. Thank you so very much for coming. If it's your first time in Paris, I hope you fall in love with it, just like I did. Finally, it's amazing we are all together."
Then came the promise that made the comeback even more emotional. "I made a promise to come back, to be back on stage," Dion said. "So here I am, singing for you and singing for me, singing life!" She later added, "Thank you so very much for your support, your patience and if I may say so: I am everything I am because you loved me," before moving into "Because You Loved Me."
Dion's last full concert was in March 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic halted her tour, followed by her 2022 diagnosis of stiff-person syndrome. She has since worked through physical and vocal therapy, immunotherapy and Pilates to prepare for her return. As Dion previously told Harper's BAZAAR, "It's been so long, I would like to offer them something to show how I've missed them." After six years, Paris finally got its answer: Céline Dion is back.
